PercentMobile End of Service Announcement.

Hi.

It is not without some sadness that we announce today that PercentMobile is being shutdown.

We started PercentMobile to rapidly build out and test new ideas in visualizing data, and providing a better understanding of mobile audiences.

For the last several years PercentMobile was provided for free to site owners who appreciated a mobile analytics service designed for people, not specialists. In return, we had the privilege of watching over hundreds of millions of mobile page views across more than ten thousand sites in our network. Insights derived from this experience led to the discovery of several untapped opportunities. Our interest began to shift from tracking activity on mobile pages to exploring the where and when of engagement in the physical world — the moment before someone actually reaches content on their mobile device. The Smartphone is becoming the “mouse” of the real world and we are determined to bring understanding to the flood of data being generated by this Offline to Online behavior.

In preparing to move 100% into this next project, we’ve decided to shut the PercentMobile service down to help focus our efforts.

For us what is most important going forward is that the best of PercentMobile and all we have learned will live on in another service – Delivr.com

Delivr is unlocking the value of the smartphone as the link between the real and on-line worlds. Delivr works with content owners, brands and application developers to enhance real-world interactions, providing campaign management, analytics and other services. Today Delivr offers a great QR Code® and NFC Tag solution, managing and tracking Offline to Online engagement across more than 100 countries worldwide.

Of course we are not closing down PercentMobile at once, the service will undergo an orderly shut down between July 1st and July 31st.

The following is a schedule of activities:

July 1st, 2012 – July 14th, 2012

All account users, please remove the PercentMobile tracking code from your site. WordPress Plugin Users remove the PercentMobile Site Tracking ID from the appropriate mobile analytics set-up screen.

July 15th, 2012

We will stop tracking your data.

July 16th, 2012 – July 30th, 2012

Sign into your account at anytime to export your report data. These exports are only available for you.

July 31st, 2012

The PercentMobile service will be shut down and all user traffic data will be destroyed by the end of August.

Most importantly, we want to express our gratitude to you, our community, for your support of PercentMobile, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Delivr.

Big question for me is always is it really “mobile” if it is at home, from the sofa, over wifi..

Hyper Books Mobile Web-based E-Book Reader Launches Today

We’re big believers of the mobile Web. So much so that PercentMobile’s focus on exclusively tracking mobile Web browser-based traffic is our bet on the importance of understanding your mobile Web-based audience.

Others are seeing it this way as well.

Fred Wilson, in a recent blog post, “Mobile Reading Trends At AVC” – wrote this after sharing the results of the AVC blog’s mobile traffic with his readers,  

“But the big message is the early adopters are reading more and more on their mobile devices and at the current growth rates, half of the visits to AVC could be on mobile devices by the end of 2012. That is a megatrend. And it is investable.” 

When someone commented about supporting all manner of mobile Apps, Fred Wilson responded,

“I prefer to read in a broswer. It has all the features I’ve come to know and love.”

Later in response to another reader he wrote,

“I’m a fan of the web on mobile. Apps are great for some things but i like to read in a browser and so that’s my frame of mind regarding AVC.”

Will the rise in mobile Web readers spill over from blogs to books?

Hyper Books believes it will and is leading the way.

Amazon EC2 troubles bring down Reddit, Foursquare, Quora, Hootsuite and more

The popularity of Amazon’s cheap, easily scalable hosting is showing its downside right now, with a number of popular websites and services throwing up errors or being down completely.

Foursquare, Quora, Reddit and Hootsuite are among those affected by technical troubles on Amazon’s servers. The company’s status dashboard currently shows problems with the company’s Elastic Compute Cloud and Relational Database Service operations, based in North Virginia, with connectivity issues confirmed.

“We can confirm connectivity errors impacting EC2 instances and increased latencies impacting EBS volumes in multiple availability zones in the US-EAST-1 region. Increased error rates are affecting EBS CreateVolume API calls. We continue to work towards resolution”
